Academic Success Center
Policies for Students

Consistent enforcement of the ASC policies will help create a positive environment for learning. Students who violate the policies will be asked to leave and may lose their privilege to use the center.

¨  Come to the Academic Success Center early.  Don’t wait until the last minute to clear up any problems you may be having  or to print your final documents.  Allow yourself plenty of time.

¨  Bring all your materials with you when you come to the Academic Success Center.  Remember to include any needed textbooks, class handouts (especially written instructions about the assignment you’re working on, or the program you’ll be using) calculator, paper, pencil, and a disk on which to save any computer projects.

¨  Due to the limited number of available tutors, individual tutoring appointment sessions are a maximum of thirty minutes. If several students from the same class want to come as a group, the tutor can provide small group tutoring. Students needing more tutoring will be responsible for getting their own personal tutor.

¨  Before coming to the Academic Success Center for tutoring, make a written attempt at solving the problem or writing the exercise on your own.  This helps you figure out what your questions are and helps the Academic Success Center tutors know how best to help you.

¨  A student may print a maximum of ten copies per document.  Any additional copies needed must be made by photocopying.

¨  Food, drink, and tobacco products are not allowed in the Academic Success Center.  Students who bring such products will be asked to seal them and put them in their book bags or take them outside.

¨  Cellular phones are a distraction to all users of the Academic Success Center.  If a student makes or receives a call on a cellular phone, the student should be asked to step outside to complete the call.  If a cell phone or pager rings or beeps, the student will be asked to set the phone to vibrate.

¨  Please do not leave books, coats, purses, etc. unattended.  The Academic Success Center is not responsible for your personal property.

¨  In order for students working on class work to have access to needed space and equipment, the Academic Success Center requires that students using computers for personal e-mail , Internet searches, or other personal projects must give up computers to students waiting to do class work.

¨  Small Children are not permitted in the Academic Success Center.

¨  The Academic Success Center is for the use of Columbia State Community College students, faculty, staff, and applicants only.  All Columbia State Community College students are charged a Technology Access Fee, which entitles them to the services of the Academic Success Center, as well as access to computer labs, etc.  Due to the heavy demand by students for these services and the expense of providing such services, non-students may not use these facilities.

¨  The use of alcohol and other drugs on Columbia State Community College property is prohibited.  If a student appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs contact Security. DO NOT attempt to eject the student yourself.

¨  No individual is allowed to carry a weapon on campus.  Call Security if such a situation arises.

¨  No animals, except seeing-eye dogs and hearing-ear dogs, are allowed on campus.

¨  In no case may students bring their own games to play or install software on the Academic Success Center computers. Students may not copy software from the Academic Success Center.

¨  The Academic Success Center's dictionaries, computer manuals, current textbooks, solutions manuals, and study guides are for use in the Academic Success Center only and may not be removed from the room.

¨  If a student leaves a computer unattended for ten minutes or more, a staff member may exit the program and allow another student to use the machine.

¨  Students may not use staff telephones in the Academic Success Center without permission of the staff.

¨  Students are not permitted to play computer games, participate in chat rooms, or instant messaging.

¨  Due to limited space, the ASC may not be used as a study hall or for large group projects.

¨  Students must speak softly and keep noise level to a minimum yet due to tutoring there is an assumed amount of noise in the ASC.

¨  Students must show respect for staff and students.
